With project SLOTD 4.0, "Structure and lightweight construction optimized standard payload module and satellite bus connection for the transfer of technology demonstrations into Space and Industry 4.0 compliant processes", a new generation of small satellite systems is created in cooperation with German Orbital Systems GmbH and HOSTmi GmbH. While in conventional satellites the bus, the control and supply unit of a satellite, is integrated together with the payload in a monolithic structure, SLOTD 4.0 aims at a modular architecture. In this project, satellite bus and payload are separated. Thus, the traditional satellite will be divided into two specialized modules: Bus and payload module. Of course the payload module is still powered and controlled by the satellite bus, like in the traditional design. The bus provides the power supply, propulsion, attitude control and telecommunications for the entire system. Only aspects of the thermal control system are divided between the satellite bus and the payload module. The payload module thus concentrates on its scientific or technical mission and relies on the supply by the satellite bus.

To enable the proper interaction of bus and payload module a multifunctional interface between these two modules is required. This is where the intelligent Space System Interface (iSSI), developed during the iBOSS project at our institute SLA, comes into play. This patented and in the meantime also commercialized interface allows flexible coupling and decoupling of the two modules. In addition to a mechanical connection, the iSSI also enables the transmission of power and data between bus and payload module.

This modular satellite architecture leads to an enormous flexibility throughout all project phases, from design, manufacturing and integration to launch and operation of the system in orbit. In addition, SLOTD4.0 provides cost-effective access to space, especially for in-orbit demonstration (IOD) and in-orbit verification (IOV) payloads.
